I had to go in and delete a bunch from picasa (that's where blogger uploads them). I had lots of duplicates. Bad part was that I had to guess which ones were actually used on the blog, so I didn't delete those. You end up with a blank picture on the blog, if you delete the wrong one :-\ Tedious, but worth it, since I didn't have to buy more storage.
Another idea would be to upload the photos to another photo site like flickr or shutterfly and then link those photos to your blog (i.e. upload using a website instead of from your computer files).
I'm sure there's a "best" way to do this, but I'm not totally sure what it is.
Make sure you are resizing all your pics before you upload too, so they aren't too big. Is your Teacher blog tied to your same account? Those pictures might be taking up space too. I'd create a separate gmail account just for that, with its own separate picasa. Same if you use picasa to share other photos.

Aww man!!! I just bought more storage...it's like $3 a month. Kind of annoying. I'm going to need to look into this more. POOP!
